Arguments for City Modelling

3D city modelling is still a young technology and is therefore afflicted with prejudice. Below are some of the most common arguments against creating a 3D city model:

Our city doesn’t need a city model.

In a survey of cities with populations of 200,000 and greater, the majority of specialised municipal users such as city planners and noise protection professionals expressed interest in a 3D upgrade of the municipal geographical information system (GIS).

The city model is too expensive.

Cities that already have a 2D GIS that show building floorplans have already made the largest investment in a city model. Additional costs for recording building heights and/or roof lines are comparatively low, particularly when considering that a city model created in this way is an appreciation of existing 2D geodata.

The city model is just a gimmick.

The primary goal of CityGRID is to assist specialised municipal users in improving the planning quality in the city. It pays for itself at the latest when large investments are made in structural engineering or in improving underground safety. Once the city model has been set up and can be updated based on expert applications, using the city model for entertainment purposes such as virtual reality applications on the internet results in practically no additional costs, and is thus a positive aspect.
